The word nanotechnology gets thrown around a lot these days, but I
wasn't quite ready to see it in the description of a piece of golf
equipment. A company called Grafalloy teamed up with PowerMetal
Technologies (they have nothing to do with Iron Maiden, I checked) to
create the EPIC golf
shaft. It uses, and get ready for it,
molecular nano-crystalline metals to make it a lot lighter and stronger
than the graphite currently holding your driver together. It sounds
wacky, but apparently it works, since Trevor Immelman rocked one all
the way to the green jacket yesterday at The Masters. As expensive as
it sounds, the shafts are actually available to the average Joe for
only $135 at their website. You're going to have to shell out some
extra dough to get a grip and head attached to it, but it might be
worth it if only so you can say, "Hey buddy, can you pass me my driver
with the molecular nano-crystalline metal shaft? Thanks." |

Full disclosure: I'm kind of a nerd and there was a time in my life when Dungeons and Dragons was totally awesome. Now that that's out of the way, there's something I need to address. The willingness to tote around a bag full of colorful dice has always gotten nerd-types made fun of, but now that baseball is back I am reminded that fantasy sports are every bit as nerdy as D&D and World of Warcraft. Argue all you want, but my bag of holding is virtually overflowing with evidence.
THE COSTUMES: Nerds: They dress up like their characters and head off to conventions to hang out with other dressed-up dorks. Jocks: They spend hundreds of dollars buying hats, jackets, shirts, customized license plate covers, can coozies, player cards, salsa bowls, memorabilia and jerseys with someone else's name plastered across the back. Then they go pay more money to sit in an arena full of like-minded role players and yell at each other for hours at a time.

Comedy Central definitely wasn't the right place for Battlebots when it came around a few years ago, but today it was announced that the homicidal bots are getting a new home at ESPN. Of course, by ESPN I mean ESPN2 and ESPNU, so it will be surrounded by endless reruns of the World's Strongest Man competition and the National Ultimate Frisbee finals, but it's still a step in the right direction. Apart from the pro class, which uses 220-pound robots, there will be a collegiate contest using lighter, less likely to amputate an arm, 160-pound bots. The thing I'm most excited about is the new experimental class. There are no rules and no weight classes so we could potentially see some straight-up Robocop ED-209 level stuff going on. Filming starts as early as June so hurry up and get over to the scrap yard if you want to participate.

This one just happens to not be a middle-age dude!
Tanya Jane wanted to display her appreciation for Brett Favre by taking some hot photos. They’re a hell of a lot better than the normal crap you see on SportsCenter. And for that, we say thank you to Tanya and to Favre for retiring! Speaking of which, take a look at Maxim’s take on his decision HERE! Have you seen the Green Bay Packers Bikini Girls?! A big box showed up this afternoon chock full of the new kicks from Under Armour. They're not shipping until the beginning of May, but I'm excited to give them a try this weekend. Sneakers might not sound very techy, but it sounds like there's a lot of science in these kicks. Hit the jump for first impressions and more pictures. |
